Normally we use tar zxvf XXXXX to unpack, then ./configure, make, make install, could we use YaST to do it?

if i uninstall my openoffice, and install with tarball the latest 2.0 openoffice, will it appear in the menu ?

it will if you install the desktop integration RPM for SuSE after you have installed all the other RPMS.

there are a couple of folders there when you untar your tar.gz file: there should be an "RPM" folder. In there is a bunch of rpm's that you have to install first. Just cd to that directory and do a

# rpm -i *.rpm

when that finishes, cd to the desktop-integration directory (under the RPM folder) and install the one for suse. I think the directions tell you to delete all the others but that isn't necessary. when you're done, the OOo will appear in your menus. Hopefully that is detailed enough - if not, post back! Hope this helps!

Tiger, Deer Park is FireFox, the alphas were labelled as Deer Parks, the Betas have all been FireFoxes, just check the version numbering to confirm you are using the right one. IF it is 1.0.7, it is FireFox, if it is 1.4 or 1.5, you are using a Deer Park beta...aka FireFox beta.

And yes, the Nero Linux, is available from Nero as an RPM or bin, you can install it directly, and it works very well. My only small downside, is it doesn't have the graphical purdiness of the loaders on windows.

The way I understand you uninstall tarballs, requires the original tarball, and a command line...which I don't know, as I like YAST, and haven't yet compiled any of my own drivers/software.
