Can not change monitor settings
 

I'm running Suse 10.1 on a XP2400 Athlon with a ABIT KM400 MB - 512 meg mem. and 17 GIG HD. and Samsung 900S 19 in. monitor. My problem is the fonts are real small and not clear. The default res. on the install was Vesa 1280 x1024. On the Samsung specs. it lists a couple of different settings for the monitor using the Vesa. My main problem is when I change any of the settings and run the test under SaX2 it locks up with a blue splash screen. Doing my Google thing I tried to enter root (su - /etc/X11/xorg.conf) and it tells me "access denied". I don't know what the problem can be, I have this same setup on another set at the house that has a KDS 17 inch monitor and you can adjust everything.

First type "su - " and enter your root password. Then use your favorite editor to edit the file, like "vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf".
Be aware that after that Yast will behave in a weird way ... you need to rebuild its checksums ("sax2 -r" if I remember correctly).

Thanks I checked and that got me to the file, now I need to do more research on rebuilding the checksum in SaX2. This is new to me.

as I said, just "sax2 -r".

After a couple of tries everything looks good except the fonts are still small on the desktop, will do more reading, presume that's a KDE issue.

As far as fonts go, why not open the KDE "Control Centre" (I think that in the "green geko" menu in 10.1 it is under a title "personal settings"), then look for fonts and select change for all. Just make it two points larger.

That's all you need to do.
