Can't start X after updating Nvidia driver with YOU.
I recently updated to 9.0 (?- certainly the distribution that came free from Novell recently?)
Everything was very smooth and slick apart from a few niggles, so I started to address them.
I read up on Nvidias site that the the best way to install their driver was through YOU. So, I launched YaST, selected YOU and chose all my various patches.
Amongst my selection was the NVidia support - I wanted it for all the nice GL screensavers.
I left the machine downloading all and sundry, came back, logged out and back in (to restart X) and got a Text login. So, I tried start x but it failed. I did a cat of the log for XFree86 and it was huge, but amounted to no screens found.
I have a backup of my Xconfig, but I need some help:
1) Can I unpatch my machine (or something) to get rid of the driver?
2) Is step 1) in fact, necessary?
3) How can I get the GL support without losing X?

Hi, maxrussel
I got the same problem with a new 256 MB Nvidia Graphics Card.
I had to use the nvidia-installer (with kernel-sources, recompiling, etc.)
Three things you can try:
1.) Start YAST on console as root or su and try to update the nvidia-driver. You have to agree the lizence agreement (a message-box will promt) for installation.
If it does not work:
2.) Then - or as an alternative step - run sax2 on console promt and configure your screen settings. Make sure, that you use the nvidia driver.
or type in "sax2 -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!)"
3.) [BEST, but most tricky SOLUTION] Download the latest official nvidia-driver from the nvidia-download page. Install the kernel-sources via YAST. Perform a Online-Update to have everything on the newest level.
Follow the instructions after the YOU section in the following HOWTO.
(Maybe, itīs you can ry the YOU steps, too)
Good Luck!
Nvidia Installer HOWTO for SuSE Linux users
-------------------------------------------
This document describes how to use the new nvidia installer for the
installation of the latest nvidia driver, which is available for your
SuSE Linux system.
NOTE: The nvidia installer does not work as long as a Xserver is still
running and the nvidia kernel module is still loaded. Therefore
please boot into runlevel 3 by specifying "3" as kernel boot
option or switch to runlevel 3 ("init 3") and unload the kernel
module ("rmmod nvidia") before running the nvidia installer.
I. SuSE Linux 9.0
-----------------
It is recommended to use YOU (YaST Online Update) for (re)installation
of the nvidia driver. There are several reasons for this. First, it's
simple. Second, and this is the most important one, you won't need to
recompile the nvidia kernel module after a kernel update.
Inside YOU enable "Installable and Installed Patches" for "Show Patch
Category" and select "Download NVIDIA(c) Graphics Driver" from the
patches list (usually at the bottom of the list). Note, that you need
to mark it as "Update" (right mouse click) if you already installed it
before and the driver was uninstalled - for any reason. Proceed as
usual now. After YOU has finished restart your Xserver (i.e. logout
from your Xsession) and you're fine.
People who aren't afraid of recompiling the nvidia kernel module or
even reinstalling the nvidia driver each time the kernel has been
updated and want or need to use the latest and greatest nvidia driver
can use the following steps 1-3. The others should use the
instructions above using YOU and skip the steps below.
1) Kernel sources must be installed and configured. Usually this means
installing the 'kernel-source' package with YaST2. Update it - if not
already done - via YaST2 Online Update (YOU).
2) Use the nvidia installer for 1.0-5336.
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run
3) Configure XFree86 with
sax2 -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!)
NOTE: There is no need to try to enable 3D support. It's already
enabled, when the nvidia driver is running. Ignore the
misleading error message, that 3D support can't be enabled.
This problem will be fixed with SuSE > 9.0 and is related to the
latest nvidia driver release.

I don't think step 1 is necessary, just restore your XF86Config to the previous working one. If you want to remove the driver you can do that in YaST, the same way you installed the drivers. Just un-check the nvidia driver package.
If you want te reinstall them again, just do that "tada" in YaST, afterwards, run SaX2 to configure your monitor. That might help, but hey, I'm a newbie
Good luck! If you find the solution, please post it here.
