Can't get right kernel-source for SUSE slick
Yet again I'm trying another Linux distro and yet again I'm tearing my hair out. I've been trying for about 5 hours now to get the kernel-source for the OpenSUSE SLICK install from LinuxFormat April 06.
"uname -r" reports 2.6.13-15.8-default but every time I install the sources they are 2.6.13-15 without the 8 I've set the installation source in Yast to several different servers, chosen kernel source and installed it with the same result. Every time I run the install.pl of VMware server it stops and tells me the headers of the kernel source don't match the kernel that's running and hangs. What should I do? (I have previously managed to get MytvTV up and running and had no trouble getting kernel sources for FC4 but SLICK is rotting my brain) |
Well, another 5 hours on and vmware.install.pl still won't complete.
It's the same error... "The directory of kernel headers (version 2.6.13-15-default) does not match your running kernel (version 2.6.13-15.8-default). Even if the module were to compile successfully, it would not load into the running kernel." |
Luckily I'm still running cp/m, z80 versions of bbc basic, and SC/MP machines in the basement (still working on the hardware repairs to the SWTPC6800 and the old S100bus Merlin)
I can code 3d stereogram creation software in 6502 assembly language but not be able to get the kernel source for a recent linux distro, typical. The only linux box in the house that has survived any length of time is the freesco router that was originally set up to share a dial-up connection with a pc and mac (so we could connect or disconnect from either machine whenever we wanted and share the connection transparently) and that took me 3 nights to set up. Oh, and lirc is still picking up signels from the remote for my set top freeview box so every time I hit mute (whenever the adverts come on) I get "222222222" in whatever text input box is open. |
I followed the first part of the instructions on the novell site http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/15963.html
and it's still the same... So, for now, it's back to windows (2000 server). Maybe I'll try another linux distro soon (like every month for the last 3 years). It's just a shame I can't run VMware under Syllable (boots FAST runs like a dream) |
