Can' t connect to ftp, irc, and so on...


Suse 9.3 with all updates

Hi guys,

i' m trying to understand why all connections to ftp, irc, telnet servers fail with timeout error.

Ricerca di irc.azzurra.org in corso...
* Connessione a irc.azzurra.org (1.0.0.0) porta 6667 in corso...
* Connessione fallita. Errore: Timeout della connessione


As you can see, Xchat tries to connect to 1.0.0.0 instead of server' s ip.

DNS are set, in fact i can ping and resolve addresses:

I' m behind a router, and the net interface eth0 is set up by DHCP ( also using static address and setting routing manually, nothing change )

Moreover, i was unable to retrieve updates until i disabled ipv6 support, following instructions find around here.

Now internet browsing is ok, updates too, but other protocols not, neither gaim or other msn messenger based client.

Any ideas?

in regards to IRC I had this problem.

A lot of IRC servers require a new user to supply log on info which is usally supplied by the inetd daemon .
check you /etc/inetd.conf file to see what services are being started at start up.

It may be that your ftp daemon has been disbaled by the controlling inetd super daemon.

this is the line I uncommented in my file
auth stream tcp wait root /usr/sbin/in.identd in.identd

I feel obliged to say that obviously ,any new services offered to the world from your computer obviously increases your profile on the net presenting a bigger security risk.

Thanks for your reply, but i' m not offering services. I' m only trying to connect to other ftp, irc, telnet servers.

Every connection attempt simply goes timeout.

Suse firewall is turned off, ipv6 support too.

Resolved...

In NIC Properties, Routing, Enable Ip Forwarding must be enabled.
