Campaign to Bring Back Suse Watcher!
 

Something missing from your life? Somehow things just dont seem the same, you get that feeling, but you just dont know what it is....ah!!! thats it!!! Suse Watcher....that friendly little program that sat and faithfully told you whenever your computer needed updated, for important it would be red, for recommended it would be orange...in those days it was all so simple, life itself almost seemed easier, the sun just seemed that little bit brighter even when it was raining, but then suddenly IT WAS GONE. :(

I sujest we start a campaign to bring back this friendly and faithfull little application, life somehow just doesnt seem the same without it, maybe if we all stuck together we could get past these dark days of the zen updater and return to a brighter time when life was simple.

Say it loud, say it proud, Bring back Suse Watcher!!!!!!!!!!!

Nope.. i am a fan of moving forward.. ZMD is an updated more robust / featureful SuSE-Watcher..

I will support it becoming more mature and being faster then SuSE Watcher.

i like smart best now that i have used it
though teh original YAST interface woudl be my favoirate if it worked!
(well it does woirk after a fashion but is so slow that it is not worth teh wait)

i hope taht they fix it on suse 10.2

personally i woudl say that this major problem called for a 10.1.1 pach!

Yes, I'm also a fan of progress. However, I've spent an entire day yesterday waiting for ZMD to update the patch list, coming up with an inconsistent list, failing to install the single patch I've selected for test reasons.

In short: it's sloooooow and I don't trust it.

The sad part is that yast/you is now broken too. It's even slower and sometimes finds patches, sometimes doesn't. I've tried to give it different update/patch sites, only to run into similar problems with the yast2 component, where I can specify the update/patch sites. mono went into a busy wait cycle once, so that I had to kill it.

Ok, I'm venting right now, but I had a very unproductive day and I usually like tinkering with my system. But this was simply no fun anymore. :tisk:

Very probably "pre yast patch".

It actually irks me that I'm not sure. What happened is, I went for a new install, did my usual paket selection dance (I like to know what is installed and what isn't), started the install and went to bed (it was 2am).

Next morning: no error messages - great. I start to do the post-install dance, which usually involves getting the available updates. Yast and ZEN tell me: none available - huh? But, me thinks, it maybe did this automatically while I was sleeping - strange, but possible.

I start to work the installation, then ZEN pops up with x patches available for download - huh again? This is when I started to loose trust into the system.

SO there are your issues.. :) Pre Patched.. As I am sure the original author of the thread had these issues PRE PATCHED..

Ok.. go into YaST, do you have anything in your Installation Sources? If so, what do you have?

Thanks for the link, but, you know, even though it says newbie beside my name when posting here, I'm around since kernel 0.93 :)

As I said, I was venting my frustration that some crucial system component does not work out of the box. I firmly believe that Novell needs to get the message because this component is allowed to touch all parts of the system. We have to be able to trust it.

But I'm still grateful for your tip to first go for a patch of yast before attempting to get the rest working ... :cool:
