Boot Problems

My PC was running OpenSuSE 10.2 perfectly yesterday, but when I tried to boot it today it came to a completely black screen with no keyboard or mouse response.

I tried starting it in failsafe mode, where I was able to log in and found that all of my files had been changed to root ownership. I fixed this and then tried to startx. This failed.

Next I tried to reboot and found myself running into problems booting the failsafe mode with the error message:

Code:
Code: Bad EIP value
<0>Kernel Panic- Not Syncing: Fatal Exception
Once again I tried rebooting and came back to the blank screen.

It now fluctuates between booting to a non-responsive black screen and the Kernel Panic error.

Has anyone had this problem and managed to solve it?

Thanks

BobbyD

Start the machine with the OpenSUSE install cd in the drive. Do you have an option to run memtest86? If so, run it to test your RAM chips. If one has failed, you would get such errors.

I'm getting an error on the memory test.

Is there anything I can do about this except for replace my RAM? (I had to replace it about a month or two ago and my budget is starting to get a little stretched)

Thanks

I guess it depends on what the error is....

Before buying anything, try the time-honored remove and re-install trick. You may just have bad connections. Also, some people report that they can fix memory issues by putting the modules in different slots. Try one module at a time also.

Be sure to use anti-static precautions when handling anything inside the case.
