Boot Loader Time

Hey all, this is my first post and im a to linux but i have just installed SuSE 9.x (cant rember which exact ver) and i love it, im running a dual boot system with xp until i cna finally become a complete convert

because it is a fmaily pc i have to have the dual boot so the peopel who are not used to the linux system can still continue to use XP Pro. My problem is that the SuSE booter only gives you 6 seconds tochoose an option to boot to or it will auto-boot Linux. This is not a problem for me but for my family it is really annoying as the monitor often plays up and wont turn on until it is too late to choose windows. Is there a way to change the time allowed to choose an option before booting to Linux to say 20 or 30 seconds? Any and all help is appreciated

Thanks for reading

Hello and welcome to the cool linux world!

Edit time out entry in your grub.conf ( /etc/grub.conf) file

timeout=5

change your timeout entry ...here timeout is 5 seconds and to change it into 30 seconds

timeout=30

and save it ! (only change timeout= desired seconds and nothing else)

cheers

Hello !
Please check this
in Suse
/boot/grub/menu.lst

Structure of the menu file /boot/grub/menu.lst.

gfxmenu (hd0,4)/message
color white/green black/light-gray
default 0
timeout 8

title linux
kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda7 vga=791
initrd (hd0,4)/initrd
title windows
root (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
title floppy
root (fd0)
chainloader +1
title failsafe
kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz.shipped root=/dev/hda7 ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off vga=normal nosmp maxcpus=0 3
initrd (hd0,4)/initrd.shipped

###########################################
Means for changing default time settings of boot loader you have to made change in /boot/grub/menu.lst

you can't edit those files as a normal user, you need to be root.
