Blank Screen

Have opensuse 11 - KDE it has been working fine for a week or so...

I changed some desktop settings - screen saver etc, now on a reboot the pc boots into a blank screen (after the boot loader) everything acts like it works except the screen is blank...

fail safe gets me to the prompt -

Are you using kde or kde4? From your description, I'm not certain if you are having a video problem or a KDE problem.

Read through your xorg log. Look at lines that start with "(EE)". Those indicate errors. If X can't use any of the sizes in your configuration for some reason, it should be indicated there.

To see if it is a KDE problem, you might try creating a new user and log in as that user. That could indicate a problem with kde. Also, use a different desktop such as xfce4. If the both of these work you may need to delete your ~/.kde or ~/.kde4 directory and log out and log in again.

Update

thanks for the reply - just an update...

I am using KDE4 I deleted the two ~/.kde or ~/.kde4 directories... problem is still there .. FYI I remember what my last change was .. changing the splash screen in KDE4

Logging as root and KDE4 loads fine.... so it is a user setting like you listed...

the last step I am going to try is check the xorg log

If you created a regular user and logged in as that regular user, that can tell you if the problem is something in your home directory. Running as root in your home directory can cause problems if a file is created that kde will try to read latter on but can't because you don't have permissions. You do need to be careful. Running "find ~/ -user root" can help find such files. Because you own your own home directory, you can delete files left behind by root.

KDE4 is still new and has some bugs. I have had the same problem caused by wine or GL after running "Warcraft II".
Removing ~/.kde4 fixed the problem for me.
