Before installing..

Lemme just explain current situation.
I am having no doubts anymore I want Linux and openSUSE 10.2 distro. Anyways, I am currently running XP SP2, on a Compaq Presario 2500 lap top. On a 40GB Hard Disk which atm doesn't have partitions.

I decided to completly delete Win XP and have ONLY Linux on it. So I am curious which way should I take to proceed. Do I delete Win XP set and the boot openSUSE 10.2.. or how. I kinda new to this and not really sure.

Also before I start should I leave some space with Partition Magic for future SWAP etc. Or if the hard drive is not partitioned yet, it will be done by the openSUSE itself.

Help me if you can. I really need help

Cheers!

Suse has a partitionner and since you want to wipe out the drive their should be no problem with keeping data. I imagine that all the data you care about has been transferred somewhere..

Great decision !!! On my Dell 8600 I have it setup the following way:
/ = 8GB
swap = 1GB
the rest of the 60GB hard drive for /home
theres no need to leave any unpartitioned space and all this can be done when you install suse it has a great partitioning tool (GUI)...

Yeah, the things I have I burned on dvd's, cd's already.

@emg
So basicly when you went installing it, your HD was 'normal' I mean without any type of partition? And during instalation you let openSUSE make partitions as it suits to it? By clicking that option for Automatic Partitioning or however its name is

Or I misunderstood? And you actually made those partitions before installing openSUSE

Cheers!

My system just had the one partition for windows which I deleted then after a few suse installs ( I started with 9.1) I finally found that those were the best sizes for me ... I had originally set it up as 1 partition then when I went to upgrade to then next version (9.2) I set it up like this
28GB for / 2GB for swap and 30GB for /home
then after watching how much disk space I was using I realized that 28GB for / was way overkill as was 2 GB for swap ( I have 1GB ram) so now I use the amounts I mentioned above you can do all of this when you install SuSE, the partitioning is fairly simple and straight forward. When you start installing Suse will see that you already have windows and will assume that you want to keep it and adjust its partitions so that you can dual boot ... like you I wanted to be done with windows completely ....so you'll have to set the partitions manually (when you install) ....
