bad block in reiserfs

I have a reiserfs file system on a hard disk which won't mount. Various investigations with reiserfsck and debugreiserfs indicate one or more bad blocks, looks like they are used for fs bitmaps. I've tried --rebuild-tree but it can't get past this bad block, and if I give reiserfsck a list of bad blocks, it says it cannot reallocate because the first bad block is part of the file system. But it seems most of the data is there. Any ideas how I can get at it - this disk had a backup for another home disk which has died, so I really do need to get whatever data back that I can. Thanks for any help

Difficult. When a drive goes bad, most times you can't recover the data easily. You can try ddrescue... but no guarantees. ddrescue is part of suse, you can also get it via: http://www.nongnu.org/ddrescue/ddrescue.html

Thanks! Worked like a charm. I used dd_rescue installed from Yast in SuSe. I seem to have the entire contents of the disk back.

Glad it worked. I know it can be scary when you think you've lost it all!

Time for backups!

Right! I've installed Bacula and am configuring the backup schedule.
