Backlight not working on Asus Eee PC 901

Recently I installed openSuSE 12.1 GNOME on my netbook, and the backlight is acting oddly. When I go to make the backlight brighter or dimmer, it gives a random one each time. While in Debian and Fedora it went 5,10,15,20,25,30,35,..., it now goes more like 10,0(0 means I cannot see the screen, it is blank),100,0,10,0,100,0,..., so I cannot set it to another brightness. Also, when the screen should dim from it not being used for a while, it goes to 100.
A while ago when I had openSuSE 12.1 KDE on it, I worked it out as a problem in GRUB. I cannot, however, find how I did this. Has anyone got any ideas?
