Let me ask you one question, do you have a problem with your current drivers. I am a semi-experianced Linux user and I made a mistake the first time I installed new ati drivers and then had to go the long way around to fix the problem.
Long story short if you have a problem with your ati drivers I will be happy to help but if its not broke don't fix it.

they aren't "broken" but it just bugs me that I know there are updates drivers out there and i dont have them installed on my computer

plus it might be a good way to help me learn more about how linux works and help me with installing drivers/software?

I was planning on using this resource

http://www.rage3d.com/content/articles/atilinuxhowto/

if you have any other resources that might be better please let me know

That looks like a good resource and of course ati has good instructions also. Just remember if you decide to go through with this and you fail you xserver won't start and you will only have command line interface to correct any problems you may have. I don't want to discourage exploration but there are other ways to learn Linux without risking the loss of GUI.

Oh ya you can always do a fresh install, even though thats not necessary only some renaming of files. but if you decide to do it make sure you have a second computer ready with LinuxQuestions just in case.
