apt4rpm vs YaST - no conflict, correct? Well, where are my programs?
 

Hey All! I decided to try Super openSuSE 10 again last night, after being in the world of Debian for a while. I am thrilled to see the packages available in Kynaptic (apt4rpm) with just using the default sources.

A few quick questions about it all, please. First, what is the difference between using YaST and Kynaptic for an install? YaST was my SuSE tool and Apt was my debian tool, but now having both... Just better package management (i.e. APT installs dependencies) - is this the main difference? Do they cross-reference, so that anything installed with one method can be modified (updated/uninstalled/etc) from the other?

Also, many of the programs that I installed from Kynaptic are not in my menu. I can't run them from an xterm, not find them with the [tab] key auto-completion. (i.e. armagetronad game - if I type "arm[tab]" it doesn't list files named arm*). Where are these files/programs? And why isn't there a "Menu Updating Tool" program, not even in the APT repositories (not the menu editor - this tool combs the system for programs not listed in the menus)

Are my apt sources still stored in /etc/apt/sources.list?

All in all, I very much like the new SuSE 10. Thanks for any help!

I am using YAST and Synyptic to mantain my SUSE 10.0 eval. version. I beleive that you too is using Synaptic not Kynaptic. For more info check this url:

I see. Kynaptic is Debian system tool. But I do not know how you installed it on SUSE 10. I have been trying to install it but no way, I cant.

Yast will also install dependencies automatically.

try searching for the programs with the command whereis
after logging as root, do for example

whereis armagetronad
this should search all the directories for this program to see where it is installed if it was installed correctly

So what's the difference between Synaptic and Kynaptic?

I'm not worried about the difference between the two (Kynaptic and Synaptic), as they look similar and i do believe that they're from the same code base. And I know that YaST can take care of dependencies, but not as well (in my experience). But my Kynaptic program list has so many good progs in it without adding repositories, and YaST has none by default and I'd rather just use those (via Kynaptic) that I spent much time on to install.

I'll try the "whereis" command later and let you know! Thanks!
