Another Linux controlled update, leaves me with no linux

Hi Folks,

Another flaky update to Suse LEAP 15.1!

After the update, the reboot seems to go well.
I choose 15.1 from the options as I normally do and the 'clenching begins, as it normally does.

Instead of a gui resulting, I get what is shown in the first picture attached.

I have a couple of pictures that might help to figure out where I go from here. They are from different reboots and seem quite different.

I can boot a live linux from a usb but dont have a lot of experience in delving, however, if there were logs that would help understand what has happened and how to correct the situation, I'd appreciate you telling me where they are.
Regards

Chris

Hi teckk,

Had a look at that but it goes way beyond my understanding.

It's beginning to look like Suse and I are going to part.

I now need to find out how to install linux, (flavour reccommendations welcomed), WITHOUT losing all my data. I don't want to go reformatting the HD.

In a general linux sense, the space for linux and the swap are generous.

Chris

When you reboot and get to the grub boot menu press "e" on the keyboard before it starts to boot. You'll then be able to edit the entry. Move down through the text on screen till you see the line stating "linux" or "linuxefi". Go through that line and you'll see "splash=<something>" (I don't use plymouth so I can't remember exactly, I think its "=silent"). Remove just that section ie "splash=???" and press F10.
If that works you can, as root, edit /etc/default/grub in a terminal once you're in to remove it permanently.

OP: also, highly recommend you make a separate partition (or better yet a disk) for your user's /home and all your data. Should you choose to install another flavor that is...

Hi petelq,

Interesting!

I got into grub, I've commented the whole line containing 'splash' and generated the new grub.

That reported I have the wrong number of devices in my RAID set!

That was the only error reported, however, that report also tells me that it finds:

OpenSUSE Leap 42 3 on /dev/md124p4
OpenSUSE Leap 15.0 on /dev/md124p5
OpenSUSE Tumbleweed on /dev/md124p6
OpenSUSE Leap 15.0 on /dev/md126p2

Surely I don't need that baggage?

I've never even looked at tumbleweed so I don't know what that's doing there!

Right, I'm going to try a reboot. If I have to, I'll go back and restore that line less 'splash=silent'.

Sevendogsbsd, I'd love to do that but I've never seen an option allowing that configuration from the many installations I've struggled through.

I have a 1 terabyte pair mirrored, and one other 1 terabyte for backup etc so it seems possible!

So, I'm no further forward.

I wind up with a screen suggesting that root does something or CTRL D to continue.
CTRL D gives me the message that "sulogin cannot read /dev/tty1: Operation not permitted"

I can view the system logs, but as I don't know what I'm looking for it could well be a waste of time.

I'm going to login as root and reboot!

You were only supposed to remove "splash=silent", not the whole line.
You need someone who knows raid setup and that's not me. It could be boot looking for a partition that doesn't exist.

Nothing has changed

Crb999 05-10-2020 09:24 AM

Hi Petelq,

Yes, I took that into account. When it still failed to boot as required, I went back in and brought to what you now describe. It has made no difference.

For what seems like hours now, I've been letting the bios do a complete check of the system and its components. It has just finished and reports no faults found.

My raid is reporting that all is well.

I shall reboot, reset the grub and reboot again.

Is there a log I can find that might help anybody figure what has happened?

One of the many notes I made though was the following:

usb 3-2:device descriptor read/64, error -71

Chris
