after tumbleweed update, xinit failed, but runs as root

After a software update on tumbleweed, I see the following:

xinit failed. /usr/bin/xorg is not setuid, maybe that is the reason? If so, either use a display manager (strongly recommended) or adjust /etc/permissions.local and run "chkstat --system --set" afterwords.

I compared the /etc/permissions.local file in a laptop running tumbleweed and both files were identical. Does xorg not have the permissions to run as local user? If so, is this fixed in a root terminal?

The adjustment in /etc/permissions.local is to remove the # that makes the last line a comment. In a roundabout way it means to run Xorg as non-root user, /usr/bin/Xorg needs to have root's permissions 4711:
Code:
 ls -l /usr/bin/Xorg
-rws--x--x 1 root root ... /usr/bin/Xorg

Solved

I removed the # remark in /etc/permissions.local in the last line as you indicated and in root terminal ran 'chkstat --system --set' and rebooted and now have a local user desktop. I also did a 'zypper update' and now have a tear free desktop. The nvidia card was not working well with the video drivers from the first install.
Tumbleweed now running smoothly.

The only method to update Tumbleweed is:
Code:
zypper dup
as root.

No other command or Gui will update properly an Tumbleweed System.

This used to be gospel, but is not any more. https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1030829 seems to be the (or some) authority. Some months ago I saw an announcement on the factory mailing list, but haven't found it lately, or any official announcement. Possibly the latter is waiting on more bugs to be worked out of it.
