After Online update: Hard drive working and working
 

Hello!

I just fresh installed Suse 9.1 from CD. It did boot correctly after I turned off. But then I run the online update. All patches were installed correctly. Then I switched off - turned on. Suse is booting, but is checking my hard drive... and checking... checking... I let it run and after half an hour I realized that it crashed (wow)

Anyone an Idea what went wrong?

I think you should take a look at a new thread that came out today called "suse has a lot of memory leaks!!!".

It sounds like you might be having similiar issues

BTW I solved the problem by not installing the kernel update after the first install.

Most likely the hard drive activity is due to the updatedb program running. Depending on the specs of your machine, this may take a fairly long time. man updatedb for more info -- J.W.

hmm J.W. are you talking about minutes or hours? and is crashing normal? :-/

Well naturally crashing isn't normal, but the very first time you do an update, there can be a *lot* of changes, and the updatedb process can take a pretty long time. After the initial one, the subsequent ones shouldn't take as long.

Also, when you say "it crashed", do you mean that the entire system totally locked up and you had to do a hard reboot, or just that the individual process seemed to just not respond for what seemed to be a pretty long time? I'd be surprised if it were the former, and if it were the latter, it may not be unusual. What are the specs of your machine? I can't offer any guidelines for how long it should take for a given PC, but if you happen to running, say, a P3 600Mz with 96Mg RAM it will take noticeably longer than if you're running a P4 3.0Gz with a gig of RAM. -- J.W.
