Okay, could somebody help me, this might be a really stupid newbie question or already answered.
I downloaded the 9.3 files for ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.3 directory. I downloaded and burned the 9.3 mini-installation CD and ran it. But for some reason, the 9.3 files I downloaded seem not to be accepted as an installable Linux version. Also, the structure of that whole directory looks incomplete compared to 9.2 and 9.1 directories.
Maybe 9.3 isn't downloadable from ftp.suse.com yet, or something?
And if so, what is the 9.3 mini installation iso for?
That is the livecd version. It's not installable. The installable version is the one you buy. The source code is available if you want to build it yourself. Same as RedHat EL/ES/AS.
This not completely correct. The mini-installation-ISO is a bootable CD that contains the YaST installer. To use it, you will require a 'real' source of SUSE 9.3, which is currently only available in shops (and some 'grey' ISO rips on the net). But a FTP version of SUSE 9.3 will be released soon in the same directory where you currently find the FTP-ADD-ON files (files that are missing on the 5 CD set for non-DVD drive users).
As soon as the full FTP version is released, you can use the mini-ISO to boot your PC and setup the installation to receive the files from FTP. It can also be used to install from sources on your local network, which is very useful when you need to install SUSE on several computers from a single source.

Correct - SuSE has not yet made the FTP version of v9.3 available yet. I would expect that they would be doing so sometime in the next few weeks, but that is strictly just a guess on my part -- J.W.
