9.2 pro high horizontal refresh rate gives black screen

After the first stage install, I boot to 9.2 and everything works perfectly until it comes to starting up what I presume to be the second stage install or sax2.

I get a black screen and my monitor warns me the horizontal refresh rate is too high (74.25 or so). My monitor (Gateway EV700 - fully supported) has a range of 30-70Hz only.

I read that vga mode goes to 75Hz or so, so I changes my xorg.conf to this:

Section "Monitor"

Only the first part applies (I think) but I've given the rest for completeness, just in case.
(I've changed the Modelname and Vendorname along with the rates myself and put them to the correct ranges/values but the defaults didn't even get me the fancy kernel load screen)

Is there a different config file that needs changing?
