3d support in SLP 9.3
 

Hello, folks.

Basically, I download the nvidia driver using YOU. After some time I eventually get the signal that the install went OK.

However, I'm not getting 3D support. Every time I try to update the driver, and then go to enable 3D, I'm told that 3D is not supported and I have to reinstall the driver. I've selected Update in YOU several times, now, and each time it says the install went through just fine. I've tried restarting my system, as well, with no success. I've tried also

" 2) Use the nvidia installer for 1.0-7174.

modprobe agpgart
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run -q

3) Configure X.Org with

sax2 -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!) "

and there was no result. Yes, that is not the latest nvidia driver but my video card is an old one and that's the last nvidia driver which supports it. Through the installation of 7174 I get the message " No precompiled kernel modules found..."(in the nvidia website) and the build process of the kernel module sends this error (/var/log/nvidia-installer.log):

I'm still pretty new to SuSE and Linux in general, and well I'm definitely no expert in compiling the kernel... when I attempted to install the nvidia drivers in Fedora Core 4... lets just say it didn't go so well ;)

Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for things to try, but I remembered reading something in the Suse installation steps on the nvidia site.... ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup...taller-HOWTO#3

at the bottom, there is a note... There's my 2 cents... I hope it helps somewhat?

10x for trying to help me voxel, but I am absolutely sure that the nvidia driver is not running. :(

eXTigyroue your doing the right thing. Its not your or suse fault its nvidia and their crappy ass server for linux drivers over half the time its eather down or cuts you off in the middle. suse will take that as a success and let you only think the driver compiled.Took me 2 days on my last suse install to finnaly get the whole driver from nvidia.Just keep trying sonner or later you'll catch nvidia's server in a good mood.Also i had one box that with the firewall off it would not download from nvidia worked with everything else but the nvidia linux server.

Thanks ldconfig but it seems that it is not the nvidia server and that the only way to get rid of these problems I have to compile the kernel module on my own. If anyone know how can the nvidia video driver kernel module be compiled without this error, please give me a shout. :confused: :rolleyes:

Sorry but you don't compile it on your own the nvidia driver is closed source. And yes that is the problem your having.

That means it didn't finish. The connection was lost.

If this is the case, why the nvidia driver kernel module compiles without even one err on my Slackware 10.1 as many times as you want. (I think it is the kernel source that comes with SLP 9.3)

Because the nvidia linux server was working at that time. Just keep trying you will get through. And the "If this is the case" is uncalled for i replyed to help NOT to lie to you.
Have a nice day and i hope you get it going. The nvidia 7676 driver does work with suse9.3 i'm running it right now but it took 5 or 6 trys to get through and and have it finish.

there is another little harder way of doing this in case there is a problem with the load of nvidia's server, is to download the drivers via the nvidia's web page. You can use just a web browser, would be preffered if you used konqueror(cause of it's kget, it can resume downloads), then you will download the file for your kernel and distribution (if I remember well). After you download it read the installation page , it's very easy to follow the steps.
You just go in single user mode and do the steps as the web page said.
To go into single user mode do the following
CRTL+ALT+1 (to change into terminal mode)
login as root
init s

then go to the path you downloaded the file and do (very sorry for not remembering what to do, but it's only one command using the file's name) what the page is saying.

You will get into some trouble but it's not that hard after you finish.

(I remember doing that for suse 9.1 and 9.2 I didn't try yet with 9.3 but I don't think it woud be anything different)
