1440x900 resolution problem .. help
 

Running Suse 10.1 on Dell E1405 Laptop with Core 2 @ 2.0 Ghz and Intel 945gm
video card. At first there was no issue, KDE would stat with 1440x900 resolution just fine. Recently, it either boots to 1440x900 or 800x600 on random. I have no idea what to do? any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have a nearly identical laptop, the E1505. The exact same thing was happening to me. Out of the blue it would boot to a different screen resolution for no apparent reason.

What I did was:

Right click on the desktop, and go to 'Configure Desktop'
Click the 'Display' button on the left.
Check the box 'Apply settings on KDE startup'

Make sure your resolution is what you want when you do this. Reboot if necessary to get to 1440 x 900.

I did this a couple days ago and so far it has booted into 1440 x 900 each time

I'm a noob too so you may get some better responses, or a reason for why it is happening.

thanks for the input, but the 1440x900 is not on the list. During boot, i did notice
a line that said " patch to resolution 1449x900 - failed" or something like that.
Where should i look?? This is becoming sort of annoying,.....

I know that 1440 x 900 won't be on the list if it didn't boot to that resolution. Go into Yast and select Hardware, then Graphics Card and Monitor. From here you should be able to select the right resolution. After that, reboot. If it reboots into 1440 x 900, then do what I suggested about checking the 'Apply settings on KDE startup' in the desktop configuration/display settings. So far my laptop has booted into 1440 x 900 every time now.

I must say though that this laptop still boots with no audio on occasion. I haven't yet figured that one out.

That's good to hear. Do you ever have any problems with your laptop booting with no sound on occasion? Or is it just me.

only once i had no sound and found that under volume -> mixer , the PCM volume control was at the very bottom. Turned that up and whola... if thats fine, then I would check the boot log for any failed devices. Oh yeah, so far so good. Boots to 1440x900 everytime. Awesome

Hey fishstick, are you still running 10.1? I installed 10.2 GM on my laptop, and now the best resolution I can get is 1280 x 1024. This really sux, I should have just left it alone. Tried everything, changing it in sax2, but even when I changed it to 1440 x 900, then hit 'test' as sax recommends, it only goes to a lower resolution. This is really bumming me out. Benn looking for solutions for a while. May have to roll back to 10.1 soon.

I had the same problem on one of my boxes. I know this is the hard way but what I did was re-install the system and at the end of the install where it goes to hardware config, It let me change the rez by just clicking on the rez that it showed and a drop down menu had 1440x900 on it.
I know it aint the right way and it takes 1/2 hour or so but it worked for me.

Right at the end of the install, it shows the hardware config, and I did change it to 1440 x 900, there were tons of resolutions available, but when it booted the first time it went to 1024 x 768. Now the best I can get is 1280 x 1024, which obviously will not work on this wide screen.

I may try a reinstall, got nothing to lose really, except time :)

Well screw this. I got to the end, hardware configuration, and it identified the resolution at 1680 x 1050 or whatever the max is, so I click 'test' and it comes up at 1280 x 1024 in the XFine test mode. Needless to say it is not working and 1280 x 1024 is the best I can get. Suse 10.1 worked fine..

Gonna try Slackware 11
