12.1 kppp modem issues

I have installed 12.1 32 bit on my system and have a Agere modem which worked in another machine under Suse 10.3.

lspci -nnkv

03:0a.0 Communication controller [0780]: Agere Systems Venus Modem (V90, 56KFlex) [11c1:0480]
Subsystem: Actiontec Electronics Inc Device [1668:0480]
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 18
Memory at fdefe000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
I/O ports at ac00 [size=256]
I/O ports at a800 [size=256]
I/O ports at a400 [size=8]
Capabilities: [f8] Power Management version 2
Kernel driver in use: serial

setserial -G /dev/ttyS4 :

/dev/ttyS4 uart 16550A port 0xac00 irq 18 baud_base 115200 spd_normal skip_test

so I setserial to the above.

wvdialconf wvtest
Editing `wvtest'.

Scanning your serial ports for a modem.

Modem Port Scan<*1>: S0 S1 S2 S3
ttyS4<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttyS4<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud
ttyS4<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.
Modem Port Scan<*1>: S5 S6 S7

Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?

I am fairly sure it is not in use or on-line.

with these settings

I dialed the ISP the system will be using

and minicom connects, stays online.

YaST -> network settings -> modem is another issue. It seems to sometimes detect the modem as /dev/modem or /dev/ttyS4 but does so on it's own.

KPPP, which is what I would be using does not detect the modem on /dev/modem or /dev/ttyS4

I am at a loss where to proceed.

I installed and ran scanmodem. I will attach that here also if that is useful to someone who knows but I am thinking the modem is working since minicom can use it and it seems to be listed in the pci list.

I have been and will still be googling but if anyone has any in-sight to share I would be most grateful. I am on the machine right now through my home network but this is for a friend that does not have much and is confined to the cheaper dial-up for now.
