I currently have SLED 10.1 installed and am wanting to install the new 10.3 OpenSUSE, can I install it ontop of the Enterprise as an update and not loose all my wireless connections and other data?
If your current setup is working, it begs the question, "Why do you want to upgrade?"
That's not very helpful. There are many reasons someone would want to 'upgrade' to Opensuse 10.3. I'm considering the same move for the following reasons:
fixes, patches and updates are more frequent.
newer versions of many applications
No need for the 'stable' release schedule of SLED10
SLED10 has broken several times for me, mostly in YAST becomming disabled. I can start the YAST GUI but most utilities don't work. In curses mode, several work but some still don't such as "software management".
Quote:
Make sure you backup your current installation before you try upgrading and you will not have to worry.
I was hoping for more information on the best 'upgrade' path. Info such as:
point the installation source to the Opensuse10.3 repos and do a YAST Online Update
Download the Opensuse 10.3 DVD and restart your system from this CD. Choose the 'upgrade existing system' option at the prompt...
Don't upgrade at all. Instead, backup your home directory, and reinstall the OS from scratch. After the installation and patches/updates are complete, restore your homedirectory and then create a user account with the same name as your old account, making sure that...
If you can provide more information, we would all appreciate it. Thanks.

Nope. Novell SLED is not "upgradable" to openSUSE. You can make a copy of your /etc directory and its contents... in particular the /etc/sysconfig dir and its contents to help in the migration for configuration. As for the rest, might need to backup all of it unless you have the areas of interest on different partitions, then you might be able to ignore those partitions on reinstall and mount them up later.
Thanks to cjcox for the info. That was what I was looking for. It's not what I hoped for, but you can't have everything.
In my opinion, since these are both Novell distros, OpenSUSE should be able to recognize existing Novell Suse distribution formats and 'upgrade' accordingly.
Turns out I don't need to upgrade to openSUSE 10.3 afterall. I was able to download the lates SLED10 SP1 DVD and re-install to correct most of the problems I was having. I will continue to play with and use openSUSE on my other computers but will keep SLED 10 SP1 on my main laptop. But now I also know what I need to do if I decide to move to the openSUSE distro later on.
I think you should have been able to "upgrade" SLED 10 to openSUSE 10.3. I am sure there is a post somewhere in the openSUSE/NOVELL forum that deals with the same issue. SLED 10 is mainly based on openSUSE 10.1, so "upgrading" to openSUSE 10.3 should be possible since the codebase is quite similar.
