10.3 and ambient light dimming laptop

I have an Asus Z7100 laptop, with an NVidia GeoForce Go 6600 display adaptor. It has a sensor for the ambient light that can be used to dim/brighten the display to "match" the conditions. When I had SuSE 10.1 installed the display stayed at full brightness all the time, just the way I like it. Since I installed 10.3 (full install, no upgrade) the display dims as the ambient light reduces. It's always too dim for my taste and can be unusable at times. I know it has something to do with ACPI because if I boot with the option acpi=off, the display stays nice and bright. The problem is the fan then constantly runs full throttle, very annoying. I searched all over YAST and can't find any configuration item that controls this "feature". I have turned off LCD Power Saving in the BIOS, didn't help. Besides I think that is just the control for if it's plugged into the AC adaptor or not. I have done a bunch of searches and have come up empty handed. Can anyone help me?

Yes, it is a matter of power management. Have you tried to go through the "KPowersave Settings"? Right click on the plug icon in the system tray and choose "Configure KPowersave...": there are options to set Brightness and Autodimm along different schemes.

I meant to mention in my original post that I've gone through the kpowersave configurations,... too many times! The brightness setting may work when the ambient light is high, but then the dimmer takes over as the ambient light decreases. autodimm seems to be only related to the AC powersupply being connected or not.
