10.2 stuck in 640x480 with nvidia driver enabled

Hello all!

This is my issue:

When I have the nvidia drivers enabled, my desktop resolution is
stuck at 640x480. When I check yast with the nvidia drivers,
my monitor has the correct spec 1280x1024@75.

When I disable the nvidia drivers and put on the generic nv driver, everything works without a hitch with one major exception;
no 3D support.

This is what I have tried;

At first I thought I might have installed the wrong drivers (I used various methods to do this, I'll get to those in a moment).

Builds and methods I tried (I'll post my spec's shortly):
Compiled: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run
Compiled: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.06-pkg1.run
Yast : x11-video-nvidiaG01
nvidia-gfx01-kmp-default
Yast : x11-video-nvidia
nvidia-gfx-kmp-default

When I chose the compile method, this is what I did from root;
cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig
make prepare
init 3
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run -q
sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia
Here when the sax configurator comes up, Im already
seeing the 640x480 resolution

When I used the Yast method this is what I did;
Yast->Software->Installation Source
Add
Specify URL->ftp:download.nvidia.com/opensuse/10.2
Finish
init 3
yast->Software Management (I then chose each pair listed
above, not at the same time, at different attempts)
init 5
ctrl+alt+del
When the login screen came back up, I was greeted with
the lovely said resolution

I also attempted to modify my xorg.conf with this;
In the monitor section I commented Horizsync,VertRefresh,
and added 'Option "NoDCCValue" "Yes"' (without the '');
Section "Monitor"
Option "CalcAlgorithm" "XServerPool"

VendorName "--> VESA"
#VertRefresh 50-75

EndSection

I also ran a compile of the 100.14.11 driver without '-q'
and did not opt for the nvidia-config to update my xorg.conf.
Also I did not use sax2, I manually set it up.

This is the new xorg.conf:

I'm using the 100.14.09 drivers now, and still seeing
the same issue. What am I missing here?

I've tried all sorts of xorg.conf changes ranging from;
custom Modeline's, screen, monitor, and device alterations.

I've been sitting here for two days, and it seems I'm
lightyears from a good resolution (no pun intended).

I've trolled several forums for threads similar to mine,
and I've yet to come across one that has a suggestion
that helps.

I've also taken a look at these issues from these very
forums:

Stuck on nvidia driver. Peadar Linux - Hardware 9 02-26-06 10:46 AM
stuck with nvidia display driver TurtleFace Linux - Newbie 12 07-13-05 02:59 AM

X stuck in 640x480 after nvidia install SeoushiSan Linux - Software 1 12-09-02 04:03 AM

Still no dice. I'm going out of my mind here.
I've screamed out in some sort of hyena cackle, chanting
in tongues type of thing a few times (Kids and wife hid).

Ok...

I thought just maybe, that something screwy was happening with the hardware vs. 32 bit distro (even though it shouldn't).
So I installed the 64 bit ver. of Open-SuSE 10.2, put on the nvidia drivers and guess what!?!?!
Nothing new... Still the same thing.

I also made sure that the xorg.conf was an exact match in both the '/etc/X11/' and '/var/lib/sax/' directories.

Can someone please explain what I might be doing wrong?
Any idea's would be a great contribution.

You have certainly examined the options carefully, but installing the NVIDIA driver as you have has always worked for me (with X server turned off, enter sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run -q, and then run sax2 by entering sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia). Therefore, let me suggest a few checks to make sure your system sees your settings the same as you do for both the monitor and the video card. If you are using KDE:

Right click on the screen and choose Configure Desktop...
In the Display section, make sure you have chosen the screen size you want.

In the System information (K Menu --> Computer --> System Information) confirm that the Display Info shows the Vendor as nVidia Corporation and the Driver as nvidia (3D Support)

Launch Sax2 using the menu (K Menu --> Applications --> System --> Configuration --> Configure X11 System). Confirm that The Monitor properties show the resolution you want. (You mentioned that you did in your earlier post, but check again to make sure the settings remained.)

If you look at them and do not see any obvious settings that are wrong, I am guessing the compilation of the driver did not run properly. Although I am not sure such is the case, I have seen other applications that reported being "compiled" without error even when they didn't. The problem was they were missing applications required for successfully compiling and the program did not compile correctly. Therefore, you may wish to confirm that you have the following packages installed:
1. kernel-source (the SUSE 10.2 source code)
2. binutils (GNU binary utilities)
3. gcc (the GNU C Compiler)
4. gcc-c++ (the GNU C++ Compiler)
5. glibc-devel (development libraries for the C compiler)
6. make (the GNU make command)
Note: You probably don't need all of these, but I have them on my system and it works, so it is probably worth checking.

Ty for your input Cogar.

I will definitely make sure I run down your suggestions.
I'll post my results this evening when I get home.

Wish me luck! /crossfingers

Thanks again Cogar!
