[Suse 9.3] Sound problems

Yesterday I installed Suse 9.3.

I thought that everything was working, but it wasn't.

I can only hear the system sound (not console beeps but real sound of starting up and shutting down and so on), and sound of some games.

The following programs are giving no sound:
- Firefox
- GIAM (except if I run ESD and set sound properties to ESD)
- KsCD (plays, but will give no sound)
- amaroK (won't play anything and doesn't produce sound)
- XmmS (won't play anything and doesn't give any sound)

Programs that are giving sound:
- KDE (system sounds like the sound if you are starting up, or shut down the pc)
- Realplayer 10 (is real slow, response every 7 seconds)
- Some games (like frozen bubble)

I've put all sound at max volume at alsaconfig
In KDE control center -> sound & multimedia -> sound system:
the only thing that is working is: Test sound (Test midi doesn't work)

YaST 2 -> hardware -> sound:
My sound card is being recognized as CK804 AC'97 Audio controller
state: running
and if you hit the button Volume, all volumes are maximal...

Is there someone who knows how all sound will work of all applications without go to console and run ESD (so only GAIM will work)?

Hardware:
Asus A8N SLI Deluxe (sound: ALC850 A'97)
Using the Suse 9.3 64 bit version

1) add user to group USERS in YAST -- I know the default is USER but click the box.

2) Also add to GROUP AUDIO

then everything should be fine..
Yoiu might need to set some of the Mixer settings.

Cheers

similar problem here, though with 10.0 RC1.
after every bootup I have to reinstall the sound card in YAST. After that KSCD plays, but no sound. AmaroK and XMMS won't evven open files.....

Sounds like you guys need to install the optional Multimedia Pack 1 from the online update. If that doesn't fix it, try running alsaconf from the terminal.

SuSE installs with most sound muted. Run kmix to solve the problem. Make sure to enable all the possible sound sources.

I have similar issues (currently on 9.3) and have had since 9.2. I have done some investigation on my own box and discovered tonight that if I simply restart alsasound, sound will work just fine. My biggest problem is sound from within Firefox.
I am posting the output of my manual restart below:
us@us:/etc/init.d> ./alsasound stop
Shutting down sound driver/usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1190: Cannot open /etc/asound.state for writing
ERROR: Removing 'snd_pcm_oss': Operation not permitted
ERROR: Module snd_mixer_oss is in use by snd_pcm_oss
ERROR: Removing 'snd_intel8x0': Operation not permitted
ERROR: Module snd_ac97_codec is in use by snd_intel8x0
ERROR: Module snd_pcm is in use by snd_pcm_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec
ERROR: Module snd_timer is in use by snd_pcm
ERROR: Module snd is in use by snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
failed
us@us:/etc/init.d> ./alsasound start
Starting sound driver: intel8x0 done

I have verified that alsasound is set to start at the default runlevels and it reports that is IS running when I look within Yast - runlevel editor. Any clues as to what else I might look for - I am pretty much a noob. Why would simply restarting alsasound fix the problem since it seems to already be started?

Thanks in advance-

This is not working here... I still get some sound, but not all... And the above given error's are only because you haven't the permission to stop alsasound... when doing this at root (CTRL+ALT+F1) you will see it will give no error..

I also tried alsaconf a couple of times but still only system sound(starting up shutting down ect.) and that's all... Isn't there a driver beside alsa that handles the sound... because its strange that some applications have sound and others don't

And like i said, all volumes are at FULL and they aren't muted...

EDIT:
Downloaded Multimedia Pack 1,2,3,4 and still no sound at almost all programms

Strange... after 4 reboots my sound is working

Tnx all for helping me!

Today I updated my system to 10.0 (with a new install), again no sound with the above programs. So I wanted to install those media packs... But when I arrived at the updater, I didn't saw Multimedia Pack 1,2,3 or 4.

What packages do I need so every program will play sound again?

10.0 doesn't need the media packs, it supports MP3. Linux installs frequently install with all sound muted. Try running kmix to enable the various sound sources and to set the volume.

Nothing is muted... that's the problem... The only thing I hear are the system sounds... (so alerts, the sound you hear when you are shutting down or logging in (real music, not system beeps...)

But all the other programs (except some like frozen bubble and real player 10) won't make any sound, I even can't create a playlist in XMMS just like before in SuSe 9.3 without the mediapacks.

I don't have any additional suggestions but I assure you that it can work -- does for me. I did an update from 9.3 to 10.0 boxed. 9.3 had the media 1 update. I don't know if that has something to do with why mine works but I doubt it since the media 1 update only replaced various RPMs that had MP3 disabled. Don't give up, I'm sure someone wiser than I can help you.

If someone can tell me which packages are in those mediapacks... I can install them manually.

I can also upgrade from 9.3 (where I install those mediapacks) to 10.0... But it's easier to just install some extra packages then install suse 9.3 and upgrade to 10.0 so I've got sound.

But tnx for helping me this far...

My resolution to problem

I finally resolved this by changing my alsasound to run later than it had been in rc.d

I changed alsasound to be S99alsasound in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d which effectively starts it very last in the sequence. No problems since -so I am guessing that some other process was killing alsaound after it loaded previously. I realize this is a band-aid but it's one I'm willing to live with :-)
