I am a newbie to Linux. I upgraded from Suse 10 > 10.1 and now can't mount my USB drives properly. It was working fine before. If plug in any USB drive KDE daemon detects it as an unmounted removable medium if I try to open it it says "permission denied". Whats even weirder is if I plug a second USB drive into any other USB port, then that will mount fine. It seems the first plugged in device will not mount properly.

Any suggestions

I'm not sure if this is correct. Try changing the line in /etc/fstab
from:
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0
to:
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto,mode=0660 0
and make yourself a member of the disk group.
If mount balks at "mode=0660" try "devmode=0660" instead. The man mount page is confusing. It lists the option for usbfs as being "devmod=mode" but the default given is "mode=0640", so I don't know if "mode=" or "devmode=" is the correct usage.

Another way would be to edit or add a udev rule.

Look in you /etc/fstab file and remove the line corresponding to your flash drive. Usually will look like /dev/sdb1 or the like.

When Suse creates this it locks out the drive.

Unplug-replug your drive and it will work.

Steel_J, this works perfectly. This happen to me after I installed ntfs-3g and ntfs-config. As you mentioned delete the reference to the device(s) in the fstab. They cannot exist in the /etc/fstab text file because these devices are loaded dynamically.

Debian distro and works well.

I had the same issue as above. Installed ntfs-3g and it created entries in my fstab file.
