A friend of mine just bought laptop with SLED 11 patch 2 pre-installed. He asked me to check if everything works OK, since he has very little knowledge of linux. I wanted to install some additional applications, but with existing repository couldn't find anything. I've never used SUSE or OpenSUSE, so I don't know how YaST works and how it manages installation of additional software.
A common fault was people failing to register with SUSE for access.
My memories of Novell and SUSE all good for their help when started with business linux :-) IF running a business server would certainly use SLE and register with them for support.
Thanks guys. Sorry for late answer, New Year things.
So, after registration, there will be additional repositories for additional software? I just started procedure and I have to say that they want lots of information. I'm always reserved with that kind of registrations, especially when they want more then it's obviously needed. Will have to check with my friend if he wants to register or I will just run this thing over with some other distro.
the free OpenSUSE 12.2 requires non of the registering ( also a much shorter life span and YOU are your tech support)
( but the novell site that has the opensuse forum dose want a lot of info )
Yes, I'm aware that this is commercial distro, but since it's not mine, I'll let my friend decide if he wants to give all that information they want. I expected that everything will be working out of the box, but there are some problems with multimedia. H264 codec is not present and I'm sure some other are not there as well. I googled and from what I could see these codecs can be installed from third parties repositories only (packman). I expected Novel could provide them, but it seems they can't provide everything.
