resize root partition after install

Hello,

I'm running 9.2 pro, and have tweaked my system almost to death now, which is why I don't want to reinstall. Problem is, is that I never set up separate partitions for anything really, except my music.

So root / is almost full, but my last tweak, prelink, needs space! Can I resize my partition safely? How should I go about it?

I have:
hda1 Empty space 3gb
hda2 Swap partition 500mb
hda3 Root partition 6gb

So I want the empty space sticky taped to the root partition so I can prelink safely. I tried moving my home directory to the empty space but copying the user was a dismal failure, almost lost the ability to log into kde (horror)

I think that resizing requires free space at the lower end of a partition. In your case I recommend to 'outsource' part of the tree to the 3GB partition:

- Create a partition/filesystem in the empty space.
- Mount this partition to e.g. /home_new
- Copy the data from e.g. /home to /home_new
- Change /etc/fstab to mount /dev/hda1 to /home
- Reboot

This is just an example where /home is transfered from the root partition to hda1. You can do this with every entry from the main tree (e.g /var, /usr, /tmp, etc.). I recommend /home, but you need to check your space requirements.
