Printer is detected, but doesn't print

i've just installed my firt Linux (SUSE 10). went throught install basically ok. but now have some issues to resolve. i'll make separate threads for each.

Printer isn't printing.

During the installation my printer was correctly detected (HP LaserJet 5L, direct connection to LPT1). and when i click "Test" printer, select Text print (or anyother for that matter, i tried graphics options too) it shows me msg saying it send a print job, but printer doesn't do anything. Its not physical connection, and the printer in on and in Ready state. I tried it test print from Yast after the installation with the same results.

any suggestions are very appreciated.

Thank in advance!

Hello,

have you tried to switch the LPT-Port to standard in the bios?
Instead of EPP or ECP?
BTW. Sometimes you have to wait up to 60sec or sometimes longer.

im sorry, it appears to be working, but not throught Test option. :-/
i assumed it doesn't work since it didn't work when i did Test, but later i tried to print from text editor and it printed fine. i'll post back if i have futher problems printing graphics etc.

60sec is a long time to start printing. i only know of one reason printer can take this long to start - if its in sleeping mode, some printers it takes a little while to wake up.

i didn't change BIOS settings, and since it seems to be working im not going to for now. but i think its Standard already, and its defiantely not ECP, i don't like LPT port unseesesary using additional harware resources.

known bug

There is a bug with SuSE-10 in the printer driver for some motherboards connected to HP laser jets. If you use the test function in the cups, you will NOT be able to print.

The solution/fix to the problem is simply to reboot, and then you can print.

Most unlinux like. But I am told it works. ... And yes it is a known bug.
