Right try again. This version will be very brief...

I have had this problem with Suse 10.1 and now with 10.2 and i am almost certain in my limited knowledge that it's something to do with Suse and NVIDIA cards.

I've been monitoring the temp on mine (see screenshot) and just before a freeze-up last night it reached 159deg on the scale I've got a GeForce 6200 LE by the way.

Can other people use the app and see if they too are experiencing high temps? Watching stuff on youtube seems to do the trick for me!

Hi, I am watching the temp of the system using gkrellm. All temperatures are normal (CPU 43deg Celsius, Motherboard 34deg, and another one dont know exactly what it is , is 49degC).So nothing is above normal. But the system freezes occasionally - 3-4 times a day.

Do you have a NVIDIA card and what temp is it running at when the system freezes up though?

Progress has been made!

colinlc and everybody else:

I can now duplicate the problem (my problem, at least) consistently. It is somehow related to the mouse driver; specifically, there seems to be something broken in the vertical scroll process.

If I open up a large web page, one that requires me to scroll down several screen-height pages, and I use the scroll wheel on my mouse, the computer will lock up after I scroll down through about a page. If I use the scroll bar on the right side, I can maybe get through about 2 - 2 1/2 pages. If I use ONLY the arrow buttons at the top and the bottom of the browser, it seems like I can scroll a pretty long time, maybe indefinitely. This happens in both FireFox and Konqueror.

I am using a Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical, model number M-RR63. It is part of a kit which includes a Logitech Cordless Keyboard, model number Y-RE20. I have tried almost every Logitech driver in the YaST hardware configuration tool, and it does it with all of them.

Can anybody else duplicate this with their box?

Hi obutterball.
I think you may be onto something with the mention of scrolling. I "think" that my system also fails under mouse scroll. But I don't think it is the mouse because 'you said' it still hangs when you are using the arrow keys. Perhaps it is to do with SuSE Linux not handling interrupts fast enough - getting confused. Or perhaps it has to do with HTML interpretation? I scrolled a 66 page pdf file very fast, several times up and down, with my mouse, and had no problems at all. That suggests KPDF is okay?
Can you refer me to a big web page where your system fails and I will try to duplicate it. By the way, my mouse is a Logitech Optical, USB connected.

colinlc - Try this:

I can duplicate it if I go to one of the really long story pages at www.cnn.com.

I can also duplicate it by going to www.howardstern.com (my wife is a big fan, go figure), bring up one of the archived shows, and scroll up and down very rapidly a few times using ONLY the scroll wheel, it will lock up very regularly.

Also, if I start with the very first page of THIS thread here on linuxquestons, login, then scroll down to to the bottom of the page using only the scroll wheel, then click on the "2" to go to the second page, scroll down to bottom using only the scroll wheel, go to page "3" and repeat the process and probably about half-way down on page 3 it will lock up.

I'm still believing it is somehow linked to video driver screen refreshes, especially if you are on a web page with a lot of dynamic, changing content (advertisements, etc.). I've gone to the nVidia 3D driver on all of my machines, and I've noticed that choosing a mouse driver for my Logitech mouse in YaST causes SaX2 to launch, so these processes are closely linked, naturally, in the whole X Windows process.

Do you have a browser window open when you are away from the PC and this happens? Are you using a screen saver and, if so, which one?

Hi guys. I have my screen saver set to "Blank".
I tried the sites you suggested, obutterball, but can't get my system to hang. In fact I haven't had a hang all week. ??? Nothing has changed here, just no hang. Maybe it's psychological: thinking about it makes it hang! Damned if know! I wish the SuSE guys would look at it. 'avagoodweekend fellows. Colin

Darn! I spoke too soon.
I was quietly browsing the web (looking for work).
Then made a coffee and was quietly playing ksudoku, with the mouse, when it hung.
Konqueror and Firefox were both open (at one site each) for some time, but were 'static' while I fiddled and drank.
Now sudoku is an un-demanding user of graphics, and I was only quietly pottering with the mouse. We all have different mouses and different hardware. Do we all have 64 bit AMDs?
The only constant I can see is SuSE 10.3 64 bit OS, and mouse.

I still think that it could be SuSE/Konqueror failing to manage memory correctly.
