opensuse 10.2 and 10.3beta install CD/DVD boot problems on K6 system

I cannot get the opensuse 10.2 or 10.3 install routines to run on my backup/test system. Whatever option I choose from the boot menu on the CD or DVD, the system reboots as soon as the kernel loads and begins to boot. This happens also with PCLinuxOS and Fedora Core 7 and 8. It's like the kernels are i686 optimized, and therefore will not boot on this cpu(i586).

CPU: K62+/550
Mainboard: Epox MVP3G socket 7 with VIA MVP3 chipset
IDE: Silicon Image PATA-133 controller
