My HP Deskjet 710c won't print

I installed SUSE 10.1 last week and everything seems to work well except the printing. Do I need to install new drivers?

You will have to configure the printer in cups. The easy way is to open a web browser, and http://localhost:631
I'm assuming you have cups installed. If not, install it first.

Add the printer. You will be asked to specify which driver to use. There is a test page option once added. If it prints, it will work for other apps.

When I try that I get the following-

Description: HP DeskJet 710C pnm2ppa
Location:
Printer State: stopped, accepting jobs.
"Unable to open serial port device file "/dev/ttyS0": Permission denied"

Is there a simple answer to this?

Reconfigure the printer to use the parallel port instead of a serial port i.e. /dev/ttyS0.

That is the correct driver according to -

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...P-DeskJet_710C

The error message is dealing with a serial port. Linuxprinting indicates this is a parallel port printer. Have you got it plugged into a parallel port? If yes, what port did you select through the printer configuration?

I have started all over again using the Wizard and when I get to select PARALLEL and press OK, a little box pops up saying 'EMPTY URI'. It doesn't seem to be detecting the port. The printer is plugged in and works perfectly in XP.
