KDE wont start after 1st patch update

Ok. I have been setting up a dual boot system on a Dell Ispiron 9300 with an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 graphics card. I have Windows XP an on side of the HD and SuSE 9.3 Pro on the other side. SuSE installed just fine but to get 3D graphics support I was instructed to use the Yast patch update utility to download a patch for my NVIDIA card. I did that along with getting several other recommended patch updates from the YOU list. They all downloaded and istalled fine. Then I went to reboot my system. While rebooting the system everything was going fine. I got the NVIDIA splash screen, X started, and then I got to the SuSE graphical login screen. I entered my username and password and hit enter. The box that I entered my info in dissapeared but the backgroung image remained and nothing happened. The KDE desktop would not start. In the upper left part of the screen there was a little box that said "X Console". When I held down the left mouse button a menu would appear that had commands like "Focus", "Resize" , "XTerm" , "Kill" , "Reboot" , "Exit" , .... I tried booting into Failsafe mode but pretty much the same thing happened, X would start but no KDE. The fact the X starts after I get the NVIDIA splash screen leads me to believe that it is not a problem with how the graphis driver is configured. Something must not have been configured correctly during the patch installation process. But I don't even know where to start. If any body could give me some ideas I'd would appreciate it.

This sounds like a known problem that has been solved previously. Unfortunately, I don't remember the link, but I am sure you'll find the thread with the board search ('KDE NVIDIA X console').

I think you have to change a parameter in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager (xdm -> kdm).
