well I am not sure exactly what happened to my install but I wiped and reloaded it. Then went through the tons of time it took to reinstall wine, and IE, and other packages, etc etc.

I am going to make an image of this system (we run zen imagaing at work) and once it completes I will start loading the thrid party, perhaps not so stable packages back on and try beryl again.

Okay, now when I downloaded and ran the ATI driver installer script it seems like it may have been a newer version than I was running previously. I do also have some isues with the driver on the windows side. The video out functionality is not that great. We have about 150 or so of these ATI x550s at my work, and I snagged one and put it into my HP business class desktop.

The thing is, that I do a lot of paper work via online, lots of emails, and lots of documenting and the occasional scripting, so a lot of time I will have like 15 windows open on my PC. I pretty much hate vista, so I went back to Linux. I would really like to get beryl working because I think I can be more productive doing multiple things at once with it, plus it looks really neat!

Has anyone gotten the x64 OpenSuse and the radeon x550 to work flawlessly? The messed up part is, I also run OpenSuse 10.2 on my lapto which runs the 950 intel onboard video chip and it actually worked. It was buggy and would crash, but it actually worked.

Any tips of configuring it? Do you run the native drive, xgl, or how is your beryl rig configured? I basically installed it using the instructions off the wiki page.

SlickNick,

I have a similar experience that you so I decided to reinstall SuSE 10.2 and start from the beginning. I followed the wiki beryl 100%. Now it is working great. I even can have mythtv on one side of the cube and firefox in the ohter one etc. I love it. I installed the default for KDE and also the development part and Gnome. The following is what I did to install nvidia and beryl. Nothing is original but the segments I need from the guide:

Install NVIDIA modules

1. Donwload new module

http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_do...etadriver.html

or newer. This is a beta but is the one with support fo rthe 8800 series

2. Requirements:

kernel sources
gcc
make
have all the specs for your monitor written down

3. boot system and be sure in boot option <init 3> or you can get there from an X widnows console (Ctrl+Fx)

# cd to where the download files is

# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9755-pkg2.run -q

4. Configure the X.org

# sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia

There is not need to enable 3D, it will be enable when the nvidia kernel module is running.
I do not do almost any change here just want to be sure I can see the screen, tested and save it.

5. Reboot and go to yast/hardware/graphic card

Enter the monitor and check the configuration if I need it I enter all the parameter

6. Reboot and you should be ok

7. If you install a new kernel go through the same steps

Install Beryl

http://en.opensuse.org/Beryl

I installed bery using the nvidia driver and not using Xgl/AIGLX

Since Xorg 7.x, composite effects can be used without Xgl and simply an nVidia card. This uses nVidia's implementation of GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, not the one from Xorg's inbuilt/optional AIGLX or from Xgl.

1. Add installation sources:

smart channel --add http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/software.op...2/X11:XGL.repo

or to yast

http://software.opensuse.org/downloa...openSUSE_10.2/

2. install the following packages:

* beryl-core-snapshot
* beryl-plugins-snapshot
* emerald-snapshot : window decorator
* emerald-themes-snapshot
* aquamarine-snapshot
* beryl-settings-snapshot
* beryl-manager-snapshot

3. Enable composite in Xorg:

su
nvidia-xconfig --composite
nvidia-xconfig --allow-glx-with-composite
nvidia-xconfig --render-accel
nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals

4. Reboot

5. Run beryl

$ beryl-manager

Rmouse on the icon and change the window manager to beryl.

Another way:

$ beryl

note: sometimes typing beryl I loose the windows title. Seems the first approach is more stable.

6. Troubleshooting

Another composite manager is already running:

kcontrol/desktop/window behavior/translucensy unchecked

edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add to Extensions

Option "Composite" "0"

6. How to start beryl automatically:

f you are using the KDE Desktop Environment:

Simply type (as user, not root):

$ ln -s /usr/bin/beryl-manager ~/.kde/Autostart/beryl-manager
$ ln -s /usr/bin/beryl ~/.kde/Autostart/beryl

See the note above and it may be better not to do the second line.

HTH

tlarkin,

I could not make the system running with ATI x800. As you, I had the laptop with an intel chip (ThinPad x40) running very well. In the desktop I replace the ATI card with nvidea GTS 8800 320 mb and it is running great. I just can not believe what I desktop I have. IMHO do not waist your time with ATI just use it for 2D or get an nvidea. I thrash the system 2 times with ATI trying to make it work. I gave up.
