okay so I have a new system now, an hp business class dx5150 amd64 2ghz processor, PCI-E radeon x550 video card, 2gig of DDR400 RAM, 120gig SATA HD.
Clean install of Suse 10.2, ran all updates, installed all the stable packages of beryl via rug. Now when I run the gnome-xgl-swith --enable-xgl command everything works great, the problem is, that it runs super super super slow. So slow that is is almost unbearable to use.
Here go the error messages, I guess I am needing to add a composite extension line in xorg.conf? This is what I get when I turn xgl off because when it is enabled the system runs just too slow.
Code:

Window manager warning: Failed to load theme "Gilouche": Failed to open file '/opt/gnome/share/themes/Gilouche/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml': No such file or directory
Now, I did the stable package installs, should I have done the newer unstable ones? As far as I can tell the ATI driver is updated as well.
whenever I enable xgl and then go into x everything is fine, and I have beryl set up to not auto start as part of the shell, open up the terminal and start beryl-manager, and the minute I hit the R key on the keyboard it logs me out to the log in screen. If I don't run that command in the terminal things seem to work ok.
This is extremely weird, and I have to think it is some small thing I didn't do right but can not figure it out.
just for info i found the root of the crash. I crashed my x server again with beryl, i had never added the lines
nvidia-xconfig --composite
nvidia-xconfig --allow-glx-with-composite
nvidia-xconfig --render-accel
nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals
nd after u told me to add the last 1 to fix my window minimize/maximize glitch i added all cuz i didnt b4 and i restart x with rcxdm
nd i log in nd startx, nd same exact error i posted b4, im gonna try to edit my xorg tomorrow cuz im tired now, im gonna try removing the lines i added nd just enable aiglx which i have never tried yet. you could do that right? i read its in the xorg 7.2 u just have to enable it
another question, i have my beryl starting up nd it pops up but it never starts with its window manager, it always starts with kwin, i always have to select beryl everytime i start up.

I edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file according to the wiki page on opensuse.org/beryl and it did nothing. I enabled composite and the damage control options, as well as DRI and the whole 9 yards.
Why won't this work for me? Any help is greatly appreciated.

This happens to me as well... It's a minor annoyance--I'm grateful beryl runs AT ALL...but, still... (Im running openSuSE 10.2 / KDE)

Same here. Sometimes it starts with Beryl selected, but I have to select 'Reload Window Manager' in order for it to work. Very minor annoyance to get it up and running.
I know it will work, but I can't figure out how to get it working. The wiki page says the steps I followed will make it work out of the box, which it obviously doesn't.
I keep getting DRI and Composite errors when I run beryl manager even though I enabled the proper settings in X and I have installed every package needed to run beryl.
can someone assist me with editing my xorg to remove those lines through the linux console, not window console ctrl alt f1 console. i use edit command but i am a bit lost finding it nd using it.
same with me, anyone familiar with the aitconfig command and anything I can tweak to get this to work? I understand beryl is in its infancy but I would really like to use it.
su
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf ~/xorg.conf.bak (to keep a backup just in case)
vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and press I to edit the text(you should prefer DEL over BACKSPACE), press ESC and ZZ (Shift-Z twice) to save the file. Your problem may be the XComposite line in the layout section; on my PC it is Composite instead. Keep us posted.

I tried the xorg.conf file with just Composite instead of XComposite. But when I got those errors when beryl ran, it told me that XComposite failed. See my previous post
