Screen capture utility for making tutorials?

Is there a program built into Studio 1337 that will let me capture what I am doing on screen so I can make tutorials of how to do certain things? My memory is not so good and I find it helpful to make a video record of the things I do so that I can repeat them later on. I was hoping to use my webcam to make tutorials for using Hydrogen etc but I haven't got the webcam going yet.

If I can find a program that lets me capture my menu actions / typing and mouse movements I will be able to get underway.

Try xvidcap.

Thanks. Just tried entering this into a console but it's obviously not available. Can't find it in the package manager either. Is there anywhere you can suggest that I can find xvidcap? Some other repository maybe? thx.

Google for the Slackware 13.37 version. Or if you wait a few days, I can upload it. (I'm on a phone.) :)

Thanks. I'm happy to wait till your version is available. I'm keen to make sure I stick to the things that are known to work at this stage. Don't want to confuse myself with extra issues. :-)

I don't know much about Studio 13.37 and the website didn't tell me a lot, but could RecordMyDesktop help?

Thanks Frank. I tried downloading the tar.gz and unzipped it but didn't know what to do next. The actual executable file seemed to be called recordmydesktop.slackbuild but I don't know if I can just change the suffix to "something" and put it "somewhere", or whether I would then need to compile or something. Bit of a newbie to this stuff unfortunately.

It's a compile script.

I'll upload you something in a couple of days. :)

Here are the instructions for using a SlackBuild:

http://www.slackbuilds.org/howto/

After a while, it gets to be second nature.

Studio 13.37 is compatible with SlackBuild (buildpkg is included).

But first you have to download the devx, right-click it, and select "sfs-load".

Hey, I just got back, and was able to check the proper filename of the package I use. It's this one.

OK, thx, that worked. It hasn't added a menu item to the "desktop" list (even after boot), but is accessible by using the console. I have attached the test vid (first one was too large for the forum to accept so I had to make a tiny one..)

I will have a go at the slackbuild process this weekend probably. Keen to trial the "record my desktop" program and skill up on the slackbuild so I can access any other 1337 packages that take my fancy.

The .txt suffix on the end of the attached vid needs to be removed to view it.

Should have. Did you choose "install" upon clicking the file?

Don't forget that you can always run "fixmenus" to automatically update the menu. You will lose any customizations you've made to the menu, but you can always get back the default (with the JACK submenu) by selecting 'System -> Apply Default Menu'.

When I clicked on the file it came up with a yellow dialog box that gave me the choice of "YES (if you want to install a debian or arch package) or NO if you want the archiver to unpack". (Or something similar...). I chose YES and it seemed to install ok. Was that the right method?

EDIT: filename was xvidcap-1.1.7-i486-1sl.txz

I just stumbled across another method on the puppy forum as follows:

In a console type:

ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 1024x768 -r 25 -i :0.0 -sameq /tmp/my-video.avi

(just make sure you input the correct video resolution for the particular machine). File will be called my-video and will be in the /tmp folder. It recorded no sound so that is somewhat limiting I guess.
