When you have the opportunity to test the laptop you want to buy, you might also try Sun's 'Device Detection Tool'. http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.jsp |
Ive installed Solaris 10 on a Dell D600 laptop, and Dell Inspiron 6000. All laptops Ive tried has worked with Solaris.

If you are interested in 3D acceleration, Nvidia native drivers would be the best bet.
