Both Solaris and Windows use IP ports, which is what your test is measuring. They may well do different things with different port numbers, but they are not different things as such.
So, unless you have configured your router to allow access to certain port numbers on your machine from the outside world, it will protect both Windows and Solaris equally.
However, a firewall is only ever a first line of defence. It will only protect your machine against communication that was started on the Internet. Typically, it will not stop a compromised machine on the same local network (if you have more than one machine plugged into the router), nor will it prevent any attack in which your computer is tricked into opening a connection to the outside network such as by visiting a compromised web site.
The basic security rules are the same: use a firewalling router, use a separate firewall on each computer, do not run networked services that you don't need or aren't using (eg it's fine to run a web server to test your website with, but turn it off when you're done testing), make sure your passwords are hard to guess (and don't tell them to anyone or write them down). Oh: and never run anything as root or Administrator; that's just asking for trouble.
