My server is Sun spac server 1000e , I want to install solaris9 for spac , I insert the software 1 and boot the server , next I press Stop + a , then I input boot cdrom , then the following words appears:

Boot device:/io-unit@f,e0200000/sbi/dma@0,81000/esp@0,80000/sd@6,0;e

Turn the system off, wait about 10 secs and power on. Do not press Stop A. What happens at that point? Be sure you have Installation disk 1 in the cdrom.

P.S. One other thing to look for is in the prom, I don't remember the variable but there is a prom variable for security that will tell the prom not to boot from CD, if it is set to TRUE set it to FALSE.

I have the same problem with an Ultra Sparc 10 I bought off of E-bay. I put the disc in and it boots to the OS on the hard drive even if I have had the machine off for an extended period of time.

I'm a Sun newb here so sorry if I am asking a simple ?. I looked on docs.sun.com and basically it just says stick the CD-ROM in and boot the machine. But there is no prompt to type "boot cdrom" or "boot net"

I think sun4c architecture support was dropped in Solaris8. I may be wrong. Sparc1000e's are sun4c.

g_goblin: When you power up your machine and you see the initial banner with the logo, hit: Stop-A, that will bring you to the "ok" prompt, then type: boot cdrom

According to this: http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/816-1664-10/6m82lv9lf?a=view Sparc 1000e's aren't supported.

Try a cold boot. When you start to see the memory count do a Stop A which will take you to the boot prom. At the ok prompt type "boot cdrom" with out the ""s. What happens?

Basically what is happening here is your server looks to the cdrom on partition 4. In partition 4, there is a redirect call that tells the bootblock to boot off of partition 1. Your server then trys to boot partition 1. Since there is not sun4c kernel, because sun4c is no longer supported after Solaris8, it just hangs there.

I would get a hold of Solaris 8.
