Whats is the difference/which one should I pick?

Hi,

Im currently facing an install on a Sun Ultra 5.

I am planning to install Solaris 10 on it.

Should I go with the express or the enterprise edition?

Sincerely, Jorgen

That depends on what you want to do with it.

If you want to experiment with the latest open solaris features and so preview what will be integrated in the next main Solaris releases, go for Solaris Express. Be aware that you'll have to reinstall another release after six month or so.

If you plan do do business with it, or at least if you prefer a supported and patchable machine, go for Solaris 10 1/06.

Do a custom install and deselect everything you don't need. The default OEM type installs include TONS of junk you don't need for a home box.

What are the packages you suggest removing from a full install for a home box ?

Do you mean these packages are really junk, if so elaborate, or just useless for a home desktop ?

Junk as in not needed for a home computer. You'd have to go through the list. If you're really not sure what's what just do an OEM install, that'll included everything you need.

Yes, I always recommend to install everything from the Solaris CDs/DVD, a simple way to be sure not being bothered by missing dependancies should a new package requiring them in the future is installed.

After that, required freewares not already there can be installed from the companion or another source like blastwave or sunfreeware.

A posible exception to this rule is when a system with many whole root zones is to be built. In that case, a minimal global zone will help saving disk space.
