How does it compare to linux? Does it run on 32-bit machines? How does it manage and install packages? How much hardware support is there?

Well.

It runs on 32 bits SPARCs (up to Solaris 9) and in x86 machines.
Runs too in 32 bit mode on 64 bit H/W if requested.

How does it manage and install packages?
It uses the standard System V packaging system.

Some.
