Solaris is Unix and the other flavours of Unix are AIX from IBM, SCO, HP-UX, SGI, etc these are all Intelectual Property which means all the technologu that is there is closed just like MS. Linux on the other had is a cousin to Unix which functions almost the same but there r diff between them. Like file systems, kerenl, memory use etc, but linux has a diff whe it comes to its licenses which is opensource that means the code is open to any to develop freely. Solaris is also a little more stable but the tides are starting to change because Solaris in the business world mainly runs on a SPARC processor. Linux on the other hand can run on various platforms which is slowly starting to kill Solaris. That is why Solaris changed it stratagy with Solaris 10 for intel to br more widely used. This is a really very brief overview therefore try read more about it on the net. tony |
Aqoliveira, it is unfair to put MS and Unix in the same bag.
Unix, contrarily to MS, is based on open standards building open systems. It is true some implementations (note the plural) are proprietary, but everyone is free, and encouraged, to build compliant systems and to share Unix technology (but not source code I admit). For example, BSD, a legitimate Unix descendant, has never been known for its 'proprietaryness'. In front of this, I doubt MS is encouraging anyone to develop compatible interoperating S/W or H/W, outside licensees. Moreover, Gnu/Linux technical success is for a large part due to ideas borrowed from mainstream Unixes, so it is pointless to oppose them, Linux just would had never existed as it is, should Unix had not been invented. Quote:
Concerning H/W support, Solaris is supported on x86 processors since the beginning of its development (SunOS 5). Sun strategy for its low end systems is more based on its alliance with AMD (Solaris 10, AMD64 Opteron) than the proprietary Intel. |
secretboy, please try to use useful thread titles in future. "what?" is of no use whatsoever. thanks
