Web/Mail/etc server setup
 

Hello all

Been away from LQO for a bit, other priorities in life, job career etc. Now back at the computer tinkering stage, job for life as an A&E Consultant (as in Emergency/hospital) secured (?) thank God!

I've bought a Sun Netra T1 to play with (plus a spare), plan is to set it up as my LAN DNS/www/mail/ftp server, then move it to being an internet server when I move house (current ADSL is no servers and dynamic, when I move, I am getting static). I might even co-locate it if I get a good enough deal (did an eBay sale to the tech manager of a suitable ISP, so maybe mates rates are on!).

What I need to know is where to start, I've been reading the Linux www/dns/ftp howtos, and considering what I should start with (I guess the DNS), but being a medical Doctor, I'm not a Computer expert really. I would like to do something a bit like finegans clock (got some cracking names lined up!), but not really knowing where to start makes it a bit harder!

I'd appreciate any general advice, particularly from anyone who has setup this sort of thing. I'm looking to do dns, mail/www for myself and a few others, online picture archive. Ideally a vpn with my /home available to me at my work ip (if it's fixed) or via ftp.

If Finegan reads this, advice much appreciated, I think I have your email, but these things are best done in a forum so someone else can do it too!! Posted in the solaris forum, as I'm going to do it with Solaris on a Netra, could always be done with one of my other machines, so comments from all *NIX users welcome!!

If it was me personally, I would start with the www, ftp and mail first. Maybe test on a internal network you may have connected to the Sun box to make sure all of its going well.
Then start with setting up the DNS to point to the new box when you know its all going good..

And you can't go wrong with reading the docs.. lots of good info. But this is just how I would approach it if it was me. Make sure all the services are up and running good, then make it live for the world to see by setting up the DNS so everyone can find it.

I've made it as far as setting up Apache, installing pro-ftpd so I can get files in, and getting webmin going. I ran DNS for a bit, and was impressed with how much faster a local DNS is (never bothered before). Think postfix comes next. I'm still on my dynamic/no servers setup at the moment, so plenty of time to experiment.
