Using wireless card, after driver successfully identified
I'm very new to SOL, but I'm sticking it out in order to learn...
I am confused, however, even in the DEV repo' (I am following Chris Gerhard's instructions) I cannot find any software that extends the Network Controller... Mind you, the update doesn't seem to take hold, the BE with the updates won't boot. :( It's definitely showing up in the DDU (although under "other devices" not in networking), but how do I add it to the Network Monitor? I have had a look at the OpenSOL DocHub (see next post by me) but haven't found anything exact or helpful. If I've missed it, linky would be very much appreciated! :D |
What do you mean a software that extends the Network Controller ? It's hard to understand what you experienced and what you are looking for as you provide no precise details.
By the way, there are plenty of nicknames for Solaris and OpenSolaris but "SOL" is not one of these. |

After Googling, I found that "using the nearest [i.e. most similar] driver" was the most likely way to get it to work, but the BE wit the updates woouldn't boot... Quote:

I'm afraid you are still missing to provide details that might help understanding what the issue(s) your are facing are, like what NIC manufacturer/model you are trying to use and what driver you tested, if any.
Also, what dev release did you install that is failing to boot ? There are known issues and workarounds for them. Both "SOL" and "OpenSOL" instead of "Solaris" and "OpenSolaris" are still understandable so that was indeed a moot comment ;) |
I'm afraid I have a Richo wireless card (as I have already said), version R5C832. The driver is said to be hci1394, that as I understand it is a dummy driver used to workaround any thrown errors resulting from unrecognised hardware.
I wish to use this piece of hardware, and as I am hurriedly trying to restore the Network Manager to a Acer Aspire One that I just broke, I'm very unwilling to proceed with finding a driver... Suggestions please! |
I'm afraid you are confusing devices here. The Ricoh R5832 isn't a wireless device but a firewire one. Quite a different beast for which hci1394 is the correct driver. Not sure where you got the idea it's a dummy driver.
Please post "/usr/X11/bin/scanpci" output to figure out what hardware is actually present in your machine. |
As requested...
...my output from X11's records of my machine's PCI bus:
Code:
... Not quite sure why I've got two Ricoh devices. The Broadcom entry is the device I currently use to get online... Quote:
* IBM Enhanced (101/102 key, PS/2 mouse controller) * Ricoh Ltd R5C832 IEEE 1394 Controller (that has loaded "hci394") * PS/2 Port for PS/2-style mice The "Network" cat' only has the Broadcom ("Broadcom Corp' Netlink BCM5787M..."). There is definitely no mention of a device by Ricoh that has the "RL5c476" ID. While it is true there is a Firewire port on this machine, they are not physically adjacent, approx' a six inch gap between the 1394 port and the panel that covers the Wireless card. Thinks: "so why the DDU hasn't picked up on it?..." |
There is no wifi card in your scanpci output sample. Rl5c476 is no more a wireless card than R5832.
|
That's so weird! In my Windows partition, it's listed as "Broadcom 802.11a/b/g WLAN". Hmmm.

Okay, so finally, you haven't a Ricoh wifi card (if such thing exist) but a Broadcom one. As far as I know, there are no drivers for the latter on OpenSolaris. The only way to use them might be through the NDIS wrapper. The process is somewhat complex and described here:
