Automounter (automountd) daemon must be running on your machine. It's job is to mount/unmount NFS file systems automatically, as needed
On Solaris, by default /home is reserved for automounter home directories. When the system boots up, automounter takes over /home to mount remote directories; so, it no longer behaves like a normal directory
If you want to use /home directory, you may have to edit /etc/auto_master file. Please read the man pages of automountd, autofs, automount for more information
Note:
The same can be seen with /net directory too

In solaris 9 and above, they now use SMC - SUN Management Console to create users and it will be defaulted to /home/<user_login_name>. If you use "admintool", it'll be defaulted to /export/home/<user_login_name>.
According to what I understand from SUN, in Solaris 10, "admintool" will not be there anymore.
