Ultra Sparc 1 or Sparcstation 20

Can some one help me make this dessicon, I trying to decide wheater i should get a . . .

Ultra Sparc 1(workstation)
143Mhz CPU
- 128MB Memory
- 9.1GB Disk Drive
- TurboGX Graphics
- 4X SCSI CD-Rom
- 10MBS Ethernet onboard
- Sound onboard
- SCSI onboard
- Serial and Parallel ports
- Sun Type 5 Keyboard
- Sun Type 5 Mouse

or a sparcstation 20 (server),

dual 50mhz cpus
128MB Ram
2.9GB SCSI Hard Drive
Turbo GX Graphics
10MBS Ethernet onboard
16-bit Audio onboard
Sun Floppy
SCSI onboard
Type 5 Keyboard
Type 5 Mouse

I would be buying them for the same price.
If i'm not mistaken, the sparc 20 is a server ?, if so, whats the difference between Sun's workstaions and servers besides one runs the client os(sun os) and the other runs the server os (solaris) ?

thanks
I would be using which ever one i get, for a shell/irc eggdrop server

To tell you the truth, your probably not going to see much difference with either really.

But if it was me personally, I would go with the 1 cause well, your getting more stuff to experiment with, larger drive, cdrom, etc.

The only reason I'd get the 20 is to play with the dual cpu's.

Cheers.

There's really no difference between the server and workstation. Sun used the term server for the low end systems if you bought a server license of solaris (IIRC, included disksuite, legato networker, and some other server type applications). The Sparc 20 workstation and Sparc 20 server are the same systems. They both run the same versions of the operating system.

As for a recommendation, I'd go with the Ultra 1. The 20, even with 2 processors, would be horribly slow. The Ultra 1 is 64-bit and is quite reliable. As long as you don't want to do a lot of high end graphics it'll run quite well.

They are both very fine systems. Most of my work was done using Sparc20 duals and Tatung Sparc 20 clones. My Ultra5 is a massive step up, of course...

I'd take the Ultra1. The added processor capabilities will give you more to play with, and the larger drives are better overall. Of course, if you could find something like an Ultra5/10, you'd be better off. Ultra5/10 use IDE and 15 pin VGA out instead of Sun Video and SCSI.
