tar: directory checksum error

I am desperately trying to tarball an entire directory from one server (serverA) to another (serverB).

Both servers are Solaris9.

From serverA, I do a:

tar -cvf myappdir.tar myappdir

Then, I ftp the file, myappdir.tar, to serverB, making sure I'm using binary mode.

Then from serverB, I do tar -xvf myappdir.tar. But at the end of the tar, I get the error:

tar: directory checksum error

What's causing this?

I've triedn untaring the same file from other servers and I also get the error. It woudl seem like the tar is incomplete and the problem must be from when I create the tar.

But how can I fix this?

Please help?

Are you using the same tar binary on both servers ?
You can have problems when Unix and Gnu tars are mixed.
Is the tar extract failing on the very last file saved or in the middle ?
Is your tarball largest that 2 or 4 gigabytes ?
Did you try with gnu tar ?
