I've been reading the list of compatible printers under Solaris 10 and only saw a HP model. Is this the only printer supported under Solaris 10? I have a HP Color Laserjet 2840 which works fine under Linux, so I expect it to work under Solaris 10 also. Do HP Linux printer drivers also work with Solaris 10?

Linux drivers won't work, unless they are text files.
If it is a postscript printer, it should be supported even with a generic driver.

Thanks. Yes, it is a postscript printer. Glad to know it is supported, though I assume only the printer would work, not the scanner and the fax, but if the printer and scanner work that's all I need.

Jlliagre, now that we are talking about hardware support, before I install Solaris 10 3/05 on my PC, I would like to have an idea about the compatibility of my hardware under Solaris.
I have an ASUS K8N-D deluxe motherboard based computer with an AMD ATHLON 64 processor, Viewsonic display (19 inches wide-screen), Iomega multidrive (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM), and western digital hard drives (2 IDE and 1 SATA),and an Nvidia 6600 video card, plus the HP 2840 all-in-one. Do you think this configuration MAY work, or it is better to build a new PC from scratch using only components known to be supported under Solaris 10?

There is more than one way to use a printer under Solaris.

One is the internal way, which is far simpler to configure from Solaris 10 onward. The command is "printmgr" which is available from JDS under the "Preferences/Add-Remove Printer" menu.

An alternative is using CUPS, which need to be installed from one of the open source repositories (solaris companion, sunfreeware or blastwave).

Your configuration is very likely to work, although you do not tell about the NIC chipset , which is sometimes an issue.

You can check if your hardware is supported with Sun Device Detection Tool, which runs under windows and linux:

Thanks again jlliagre. I'll check that out. Hope everything works and can get Solaris 10 up and running in no time. I'm using Linux right now, but Solaris is the real thing, that's why I want it.

I ran the Sun Device Detection Tool and it seems that I need drivers for 3 devices that are not supported in Solaris 10 3/05.
This is a partial output:

These are the three drivers that I need in order to be able to install Solaris on my PC. Are these third-party drivers? How can I get them if at all possible?

The first one is I believe only required if you enable raid on your SATA disks, and anyway you have two IDE disks that should just work.
The video capture is probably not needed.
