sudo editor conundrum on OpenIndiana

When I run visudo as root on OpenIndiana, it responds with an error:
Code:
visudo: no editor found (editor path = /usr/bin/vi)
So I installed vi (though /usr/bin/vi is actually a symbolic link to vim).

But it keeps giving me the same failure. I tried setting EDITOR and VISUDO_EDITOR in the environment, but still no joy.

How can I run visudo to enable sudo for my non-root user?

I solved this by creating a one-line file in /etc/sudoers.d:
Code:
myuser ALL=(ALL) ALL
Command "visudo -c -f FILE" works to check the format, but I still can't edit with visudo.
